The Civil Service Commission ensures there is a fair and effective merit-based system of personnel administration, as provided in the City Charter. Hires, promotes, and retains the most qualified persons for the City's classified positions in a way that is efficient and legal. Maintains an efficient workforce through human resource support services to all City departments. Fairly and effectively classifies jobs based on their job-related contribution to the City's goals. Responds to requests for information regarding personnel policies and practices in the City.

Membership Description:
The Commission is comprised of three residents; appointments have typically been made with one commissioner having a human resources background, one having a legal background, and one having a labor background. Each commissioner serves a three-year term, with one seat expiring each year on March 1. 
Residency Requirement:
Must be a Minneapolis resident who favors merit, efficiency, and affirmative action in the public service.
Compensation:
$3,600 per annum each
Selection Procedure:
The Open Appointments policy is utilized to recruit for vacancies. Applications are pre-screened by the Director of Human Resources and the City Operations Officer. The Mayor submits his appointment to the City Council for confirmation.
