Minneapolis Arts Commission

The Minneapolis Arts Commission advises the City Council and Mayor on arts-related issues and was chartered in 1974 with the mission to strengthen the arts and enrich cultural life in Minneapolis. The Commission works closely with the staff of the Department of Community Planning & Economic Development-Planning Division, and shares their goal of developing a strong and vital arts community throughout Minneapolis.

Membership Description:
The Commission consists of 17 members; 5 individual practicing artists, 7 lay persons, and 5 administrative staff or board members of arts organizations.

Term Limit Note:
Any member who has served on the commission for three (3) successive three-year terms may not be reappointed until one (1) year has expired.
Residency Requirement:
Must be a Minneapolis resident.

Selection Procedure:

Commission members are appointed with the open appointment process. Applications are reviewed by the Zoning & Planning Committee, along with recommendations from the Arts Commission. The Mayor appoints 8 members with consent and approval of the City Council. The President of the City Council appoints 9 members with the consent and approval of the City Council.
